The Anatomy of a Song Series

It’s All Good by Goa-based singer-songwriter, Kristian Bent.
Before I get to the article, I would like to highlight the lyrics that stand out to me-
Saw my oppression
I’ve been bruised and I’ve been burnt
I was nineteen
A born drama queen
Felt like the end of the world
It’s all good
Do you want a secret?
I’ve got a bunch I could do without
If only my troubles would cut a little deeper
I’d love to see the stuff I’m made of
We survived another day
I first discovered Kristian Bent’s music in college which served as an excellent introduction to the Indie music scene. Campfire Stories was Bent’s debut album that I used to listen to on repeat. It’s been a listening journey of 6 years and my favourite song from the album remains “Bus to Bangalore”. That was until I discovered It’s all Good, which was released in early 2022.
For some reason I have been listening to the song so much that it turned up on my On Repeat playlist on Spotify. That was when I paid attention to the lyrics which brought forth another meaning altogether. What I love most about Kristian’s music is the simplicity - raw and hard-hitting words packed with a country-folk-soul simple vibe. And no, it’s not your typical sad singer-songwriter music of heartbreak and the same old 4 chords - it’s a power-packed punch to the feels, but still, in the most gentle manner possible.
I was in Chennai for the past 1.3 years working in the most typical corporate environment there is - the same old IT parks filled with folks who live for the weekends. Back then, the plan was to work, save a little and pour all of that money into my music. Little did I know that that wouldn’t work out for me at all. Several sessions of therapy later I decided to finally quit and move back to Bangalore. That period of adulting, was probably the most challenging - shifting houses thrice within the city, culture shock (yes, fitting in an extremely conservative society in the outskirts of the city is truly a task) and the constant travels for gigs on the weekends. That’s when Bent’s song spoke to me - It’s all good.
We go through life, yet we still soldier on. I think this is what he wants to communicate through the song. I will forever remain a Kristian Bent fangirl - simply because, his music just is. He doesn’t pretend to be somebody he’s not and he’s definitely not dancing to a trendy song for an Instagram reel just to “make it”.
To conclude, in his own words from one of his songs -
I’m half the man I used to be, I’m twice the man I used to know
In an era of “Baby, baby, baby oh.. Thought you’d always be mine, mine”, it would help to step away from the brainrot and tune in to some authentic folk/country/soul music from our very own country.
